President’s Report 2025

The Adams Society has had a vibrant year, filled with events and tradition. The committee has worked to maintain the Society as an active hub for mathematicians at St John’s.

The academic calendar was particularly rich. Invited guests gave talks on a variety of topics in applied and pure mathematics. Among the highlights was a talk by Dr. Bursill-Hall on the world’s most famous trinmo, Isaac Newton, which attracted the largest audience the Society has seen in at least four years. Dr. Jef Laga, a recently joined fellow of the college, gave a talk on arithmetic statistics, and another fellow, Prof. David Stuart, gave a talk about nuclear democracy. Another talk on theoretical physics was given by Dr. Alejandra Castro on how to engineer gravitational theories. During the Lent term, we had lectures by Prof. Natalia Berloff on photon-based quantum computers and Dr. Orsola Rath Spivack on scattering off random media.

Our social calendar was equally active. This year saw the successful revival of the Castlereagh Christmas tradition. We also organised the Freshers’ Fair and our popular termly hot chocolate sessions. The football match against St Catherine’s Maths Society drew a pleasantly large number of Johnians and resulted in a convincing victory. The Annual Dinner was, as always, a memorable culmination of the year. We were honoured to welcome Prof Anne-Christine Davis as our guest speaker. Her address was both inspiring and deeply insightful.

I would like to thank all members of the committee for their contributions, whose dedication made this year’s success possible. I wish all the best to the newly elected committee and trust that the society will continue to thrive in the years to come.
